It is now time for the conference! This blog was set up as part of a track to gain insight into the thoughts of members as they “hang out their shingle”. The problem is that I am not sure what I want my shingle to represent. As a fairly new university faculty member, all of my time is going to learning about my responsibilities and aspirations for teaching and research. I do want to start consulting, hence “hanging out my shingle”, but have not had time to consider what type of client I want to work for and if I want to practice instructional design or development of instructional materials in partnership with others. (or both).

Now I have a website and a blog!
What do I do now?
I am not ready to start my consulting business at this time, so do I use my website as an online portfolio? I cannot complete my website design until I can answer the basic questions of purpose, audience, etc…

I have been informed that a colleague could not post a comment on my blog because she could not determine how to register…
I thought: Oh! I am not sure how to set up who can comment. I looked around the site administration tools and found a little box to check to let others register. I had the box to allow registered users to comment (not sure if I did that or if it is default). Now a I have a question about how to manage registered users. What do I have to do to make sure only appropriate comments are posted? How do I keep the ‘weirdos’ out?
The uncertainty of this technology is limiting my willingness to use it. It seems that when I figure out a new option, more questions arise.
I see a permalink option on some of my posts. I need to figure out what that means and how it appeared. Did I set the option? If so, how? Does it have something to do with a link to the Next Generation blogtrack? Did it appear when Nathan linked to my blog from the AECT blog?

I am sitting here trying to figure out what name I want to put on my shingle. It seems we have several labels for professionals in our field, so how do I decide on 1 name that provides information about what I do?
What info do I want to put on my Website? I want to use the keywords that will help potential clients find me. How much info do I provide? When I talk to a potential client face to face, I provide a small sample portfolio of my work. How much do I put on the Web? How do I ensure my copyright to what I do provide on the Web?
Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

The big barrier for me was fear of the unknown. Looking at the big scary control panel, not knowing what all the functions were, let alone what to do with them. Time is another barrier, I am teaching 2 classes this summer session, working on research and a paper to submit for conference procedings, conference planning for the Teacher Ed division,… I know, just a typical life of an Assistant Professor.
Unfortunately, I have not had the time to just focus on learning about the technology and with my background in education instead of the computer science field, I feel intimidated by the unknown.
I am hoping this experience will help me become more comfortable with the internet technologies and provide motivation since I am accountable to the group members.

This is my first attempt at a starting a blog. This blog will document my experience as part of a blog track for the Association of Educational Communications Technology 2006 Conference. My responsibilities as part of this effort are to determine the parameter of what it means to “hang out my shingle” and write about them.
”The goal of the BlogTrack is to report to the membership in Dallas. The
interesting things will have to do with dealing with your uncertainties,
dealing with your technology, and dealing with your own personal
perceptions of being a professional educational technologist.”
I am the novice of the group when it comes to this type of technology and am looking forward to learning about how to set up and manage this blog. Will I find it useful? How can I incorporate this into the reflection and community building activities I employ in my classes?
